How Webdoc Can Help The Entertainment Industry

how-webdoc-can-help-the-entertainment-industry

As social networking evolves and expands, it’s hard to predict what new site is the next competitor claiming to fill a gap in an already busy market.

Defining itself as ‘a new way to interact online with the people in your life’, Webdoc offers a collective creative process that differs to the social media we are accustomed to, creating an interactive scrapbook of sorts.

The best way to describe a ‘webdoc’ is to imagine it as a blank virtual canvas; representing a particular subject, where users conversations can take place in various forms.

Once a webdoc is opened participants can add pictures, videos, music and many other interactive apps to the canvas. Users are encouraged to put in old and existing material, as well as their own comments from their Twitter streams even.

Unlike a Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr page that can be kept personal to the user, ‘webdocs’ are like Wikipedia pages that have become ever-growing organisms as people add to them.

Real time reactions are nothing new, however the ability to include old and existing documents is almost like a cultural time machine online, building a clearer picture of how past and present zeitgeists developed.

Creative businesses can really leverage ‘Webdocs’ to their advantage: music artists can create hype before, during and after tours and releases with flyers or scrapbooks, television programs can create a further platform for fans to enjoy discussion outside of the usual Facebook and Twitter restraints and any business or product looking for competition ideas can use the interactive element of ‘Webdocs’. And of course, it can also be imported directly into your Facebook feed and blog.

Launched in 2009, the site is still in ‘silent-beta’ mode, but news of a Facebook app, iPhone app and Android app on its way suggests that Webdoc is definitely going somewhere.

The sign up process takes a matter of seconds and it all begins when you click ‘New Webdoc’ at the top.

A Quick Social Media How-To

a-quick-social-media-how-to

The power of social media to build communities and engage both current and potential customers is something that brands are becoming more and more savvy to.

But social media can seem like a big, scary world if you’re just dipping your toe into it for the first time. Helpfully, Mashable have outlined five different ways of building a thriving online fanbase for your brand.

1. Facilitate what customers already want to do – Don’t start out trying to advertise new products. Create a community where the customers will want to return.

2. Extend traditional excess – An online community should mimic what the organisation is about. Create discussions online that relate to the company.

3. Keep it clean – Keep the design simple and the brand the focus of the community.

4. Treat engagement as a long-term process – Engagement should be short, frequent and fun for fans to interact with. Think of how to encourage fans to return.

5. Make engagement easy – Many online users are ‘lurkers’. Think of easy ways for them to interact such as the Facebook ‘like’ button.

What do we have to add to this? Make sure content is fresh, fun and original. Think of new, creative ideas to engage fans with your brand. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box!

Read on over at Mashable.

All-Leo Asks… Portis Wasp, Blogger

all-leo-asks-portis-wasp-blogger

Time for another All-Leo Asks instalment, this time with the brilliant Portis Wasp from My Portis Wasp Says

Why did you start blogging?

I’m not quite sure why I started the blog to be honest, and I certainly didn’t have a plan for my blog a little under two years ago. I do recall submitting some photography and a gig review to a Glasgow based site called Glasgow PodcART which my sister had been featured on. I guess I liked what they were doing (and still do) which is to introduce to their readership new music, art, writing and photography from local based talent. I would like to say they inspired me, but I was probably just craving ‘attention’ the day I registered with blogger.

What do you love about it?

I love that I am in complete control of the content I post. That simple really. “This is my space and I’ll fill it however I please, if you don’t like it, you don’t like it…” But what I love the most is that I’ve been able to Interview some truly amazing individuals for the blog. Artists I f*cking idolize!

If you had told me when I first started ‘this’ (whatever this is) that Rankin of all people, bloody RANKIN, would answer some questions for me, I would have told you where to go. But now I find it funny but all kinds of great it has to be said that through all the Interviews, “5 questions” features and reviews featured on the site, I have created for myself a special little clique of some of the ‘world’s finest’ that I now chat with every other day. I could be sharing gym banter with an american pornstar, talking about films with a male supermodel, discussing men’s fragrance with an international photographer… okay, so the chat is all kinds of superficial, but that’s me through and through. It’s just nice that I’ve had the opportunity to get to know some of these characters on a more personal level! It also helps that my new blog friends are for the most part criminally hot!

Anything you don’t enjoy?

Working nine hours in an office staring at a computer to then go home and stare at my laptop for six more hours. I also tend to drink after work (I’m sure everyone does, right?) so those six hours aren’t always the most productive.

Do you feel part of a blogging ‘community’? Is there much rivalry?

No I wouldn’t say I feel part of a blogging ‘community’. But I don’t think it is something I am looking for or missing out on by not being part of one. I can see the benefits if you need your back scratched but I have long arms so I’m covered in that sense.

My twitter feed actually feels more like a ‘community’. It is so delightfully random that I am constantly entertained. There is this one guy on Twitter who is some big muscled hunk who goes to the gym all the time… and why am I entertained by this? Well every once in a while he tweets a picture of his Jack Russell. Priceless. I mean, how random is that! But I love that Twitter captures a little piece of everyone’s day-to-day. The people you follow say a lot about you! (‘Muscles and Jack Russell’s’ – maybe I should change the name of my blog?)

And is there much rivalry?

I hope so. Who doesn’t love being talked about!!!

If you could give one tip to PRs who get in touch with you, what would it be?

This is a good question. But it is a simple one to answer. You need to build relationships with bloggers! A personal email does not take up a lot of time. If I receive a press release that starts “Dear bloggers, sorry for the mass email…” it is promptly deleted. I don’t care what you have to say if you haven’t taken the time to read my blog or ask how my day has been. Why should I?

I guess it continues to happen because there are enough people who don’t mind, who are looking for new content to post. What PRs also need to do though (which is super important) is deliver on what they promise. If you can get me an Interview with “someone” then great, get me it! If you can’t well then someone else will be able to. (Rant over)

Oh by the way, where is my Interview with the Sugababes? ;-D

Which other blogs do you read?

I’m a bit of a slut when it comes to blogs/sites. I want it all and all at once. So if you ever catch sight of my screen when I’m working on the laptop there’ll be about 15 tabs open each on a different site, and I’ll be clicking here, dipping into this one, playing a music video on that one, perving over this one… my laptop crashes a lot!

Sites I love; Jak and Jil, Wonderland, Nous Model Men, Sam Scott Schiavo’s blog, Homotography, Fashion Gone Rogue, Teaser Trailer, Vulture, yvymag, The Fashionisto, Didio’s blog… the list goes on. It really does.

What are your plans for My Portis Wasp Says in the future?

World domination, one naked supermodel at a time! I also plan to start sleeping with the people I Interview – it might make for a fun feature on the blog, don’t you think? They could rate me, and for once I would know why I never get a callback lol. In all honesty (because I do get called back) the only plan I have is to continue working on the blog with no plan. Each day is different, opportunities arise when you least expect them, that’s how I like to roll! But yeah, pretty much WORLD DOMINATION.
